The Colour of Love

The Colour of Love was a journey into the truths of a life built together.

I have often painted a special painting for my friends or family and as it so happened I hadn’t ever painted one for my husband, Bob. This was pointed out to me one day by him and so I went about rectifying it. But what to paint? He didn’t ask for anything particular, and he didn’t really have a special thing he liked.

So in my pondering I started thinking about what it was that made up our marriage. It also happened I was playing around with textures and making the paints run and flow and that always brings an almost flutter inside when I get a result that makes me smile inside! I looked at what I was doing and instantly I knew what I was going to paint for him – the feeling he gives me, that flutter, that satisfaction, the comfort, the joy, the love he gives me!

How you may ask, well when I paint my hearts (this one on the left here was my first one) and see the paint flowing and forming shapes and patterns, it gives me a feeling I can’t really explain. It’s deep, it’s meaningful, it’s a happiness and it’s beautiful – perfect as an example of how I feel about Bob. I just knew it was right.

So I went ahead and painted my love for him and in doing so my thoughts turned to words. Our lives together has been a journey, let me tell you. It hasn’t been an easy road together but it always has been together! Over our 37 years as a couple, we have spent a lot of time “in each others pocket” as they say, living, working and sleeping together, with little time apart for many years. We must truly love each other or one of us would have killed the other one. This along with our trials along the way, I believe, have made us strong.

Getting back to my thoughts turning into words, I put down those thoughts and started creating a poem that I could also give to him to truly explain my art, my head and my heart! This is the poem:

You can see it shining in a smile
See a glint in laughter and tears
A partnership, creating stories and sharing time
It’s colour deepens with the passing of the years
A blend of two people, a life intertwined
This path is unhurried, unplanned and unseen
some of it lit brightly, some in darkness
but still, you know where it’s been
It’s true colour is not seen with the eye
This thing of beauty is set apart
never to be touched but felt by the soul
The colour of love is only seen through the heart

The colour of Love

This is the resulting painting that hangs just for him. My heart is full, overflowing in fact, with the love I have for Bob, I think he got the message when I gave him this present but he already knew!
